Wonderful essay. Curiou if you've read Merlin Donald's Origins of the Modern Mind? His hypothesis is that there were three big shifts (or stages) of human cultural evolution. Roughly speaking, he posits:

(1) the emergence of "mimetic culture" through dance and ritual practices;

(2) transitioning to "mythic culture" with oral language and symbolic ideas;

(3) leading to "theoretic culture" with written transmission of knowledge.

His books came out 25 years or so ago so I'm not sure whether they've held up to the latest anthropology. But his ideas dovetail nicely with what you've described here, at least to my reading.
